In the Blues tradition, Carl Michaels has drawn much of his inspiration from his real life experiences. He believes that, if meaningfully reflected upon, both the highs and especially the lows of real life can be used to develop a more positive way of thinking about the future. The Exile of Mankind was his first major work. It was a serious concept album, depicting “in music and lyrics the stages of life from birth till death”.  Composed as a rock-oratorio, this epic Pop-Jazz work was tastefully arranged by Veit Marvos in Munich and recorded there with top studio musicians. The result was truly a work of art, but unfor- tunately so much so as to preclude any real chances for commercial success. The songs found their meanings only in context, but airplay of the 83 minute work in its entirely was strictly out of question.

The Exile of Mankind failed to connect with a viable distribution deal, and thus did not find a wide audience. However, any who thought that such failure would cause Carl to give up his music there were completely mistaken. Carl Michaels is living and working on the basis that “Nothing ever ends …all is floating and keeps on changing. And each change means improvement till reaching Higher Grounds”.
So, instead of quitting, he continued to deve- lop his overriding concept, which was to create a sort of modern folk-rock-opera based upon that philosophy. The Exile of Mankind turned out to be the first (historical) part of a CD trilogy that fulfilled this intention when it was later released along with Fantergia (1983) and Aquaduma (composed and recorded as an unplugged version in 1984, but not released at that time) in a package that also included a full exposé of the work,

Remaining true to his philosophy, Carl has continued to create. His new musical fantasy-narrative Oruzanien is a novel based in parts upon three songs from the compact disc album Songs of Carl Michaels Vol. I. This mixed-media work develops and extends the themes of The Psycherubians. Taken altogether, these complex works show the versatility and empathy of Carl Michaels. His music can make one feel good, even though it is sometimes sad and deeply touching. It is so clearly distinguishable from other modern works that it can truly be said that he has created his own style of music.
